Iotix: for Smart Meters
Challenge
Smart meters are metering devices that measure resource consumption and automatically transmit the results to a remote server. In addition, such devices can have a lot of additional useful functions: from detecting attempts to tamper with meter readings to signaling potential problems. But to fully perform their functions, smart meters must interact with a specialized system. This is necessary for:
- collecting, processing and analyzing data from the devices;
- building convenient and visual reports;
- emergency alerts.
Solution
A specialized telematics platform Iotix was created to work with the segment of smart meters based on the author’s TotalAPI shell. Its advantages:
- user-friendly interface;
- the ability to monitor devices online on an interactive map;
- dozens of customizable automatic interactive reports in a flexible and easy to learn dashboard;
- real-time report request functionality for both single and group reports;
- emergency alerts on any specified parameter with sending via SMS, email or telegram channel;
- ability to remotely turn on/off utilities;
- management of roles and access to the platform functionality within your organization.
Smart meter capabilities
In addition to the main function of transmitting resource consumption readings to the information system, a smart meter has additional useful features depending on the sensors installed in it. In most cases, this extension of functionality is related to protection against attempts to disable the device or falsify readings. Examples of events when a smart meter can detect the fact of impact and send data to the system:
- tampering;
- placing a magnet on the meter;
- removal/movement of the meter;
- reverse resource current;
- exposure to critical temperature;
- power surge, etc.
Resource control devices can be installed with the smart meter: a solenoid valve to shut off gas in case of gas leakage or an electrically operated ball valve to protect against flooding.
Opportunities through the Iotix platform
In addition to the core functionality of collecting, processing and analyzing meter data, as well as monitoring and reporting, Iotix additionally enables:
- Identify unintentional losses from the resource consumption curve. For example, an unclosed faucet or a broken toilet cistern. A customized emergency notification allows you to quickly fix the problem.
- When consumption stops – to detect breakdown of an appliance, e.g. a heating boiler.
- If excessive consumption is detected, suspect heat leakage from an open window or a forgotten iron.
- Record the fact and time of an attempt to interfere with the operation or damage the smart meter with the formation of an emergency notification.
- Forecast the consumption of utility services.
- Remotely control the resource supply.
Energy supply issues for smart meters
Smart meters use electricity to receive sensor data, and especially to transmit data to the system server. Two approaches are used to provide it: connecting the device to the power grid and providing it with an autonomous power source. The first method is rarely used, because in places where smart meters are installed there is not always an outlet, plus it is easier to interfere with the operation of the device by simply disconnecting it from the power supply. The second method (using an autonomous battery) is optimal, but it also has limitations: in terms of battery capacity and service life and the higher cost of such a solution. At the same time, the lion’s share of battery capacity is spent on communication (for example, if data is transferred via mobile Internet). Reducing the number of communication sessions to save battery is not the best solution, as it limits the useful functionality of the Smart Meter and makes it more vulnerable to abuse. But there is another way.
Smart meter energy saving solution
The scientific and engineering thought on this issue has gone the way of creating more energy efficient telemetry transmission mechanisms. One of them is LoRaWAN – Long Range Wide Area Network. This is a new wireless technology that is designed specifically for use in the Internet of Things (IoT) and supports a whole new class of telematics. LoRaWAN is used to transmit data over long distances while minimizing power consumption. The disadvantage of the solution is the need to deploy a separate communication network to cover the need.
NB-IoT (Narrow Band Internet of Things) is another way to solve the power consumption problem. It is a new cellular communication standard for telemetry devices with low data exchange volumes. NB-IoT network can be deployed either on the equipment of existing LTE cellular networks or separately, including over GSM. A disadvantage is the lower comparative energy efficiency of the communication (since devices for transmission have to “wake up” and synchronize with the network, and this takes away battery power). Another limitation is the dependence on mobile operators.
Whether you choose LoRaWAN or NB-IoT, Iotix will ensure quality processing of received telemetry and maximize the benefits of Smart Meters.
Usefulness of Iotix for corporate owners of utilities and resource metering systems
The modular principle of Iotix and the widest possibilities to adapt the system to the needs of each specific customer allow:
- connect Smart meters both directly to Iotix and with integration of authoring systems of such devices manufacturers;
- integrate billing (payment by consumers for services) into the system;
- establish convenient data exchange with accounting systems;
- create and automate emergency notification systems for accidents and emergencies, and set up a response service for such events.
